The painting is original hand coloured aquatint by James Forbes. It is a part of Oriental Memoirs by Forbes in which he represented the Indian environment for seventeen years. In this painting he painted tamarind tree with a squirrel. In his book ‘’The Oriental Memoirs’’ he also mentioned about the preference of Indian musicians for Imli or Tamarind
Forbes arrived in India in 1776 as a writer in East India Company. He spent his first five years in Bombay and witnessed the transitional process of an Island into Bombay peninsula. He was observant and adventurous that’s how he started sketching the Indian flora and fauna as an Artist. He lived in India for seventeen years in that time period he painted different sceneries of Indian environment. Where he depicted different animals, flowers as well as different trees of India. Williams Hooker a Botanist also executed the superb natural plates for James Forbes monumental work western India. In his book ‘’Oriental Memoirs: - A Narrative of Seventeen Years In India’’ James Forbes talks about his experiences of India during these years. In his book he mentioned different religious, cultural customs of India. He also showed how environment played an important role in Indian culture. He also talked about Indian polity, agriculture, folklores, caste system, Ayurveda and other medical practices of India.
